Krystian Zimerman performs the Schumann and Grieg A-minor Piano Concertos under the baton of Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in this remastered disc originally recorded in the mid's.
The real winner here is Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic which provides a Michael ODea - Michael ODeas Irish Favorites orchestral partner to Zimerman, albeit not always on the same page of the hymnal.
Zimerman is a talented virtuoso with fantastic technique. Unfortunately, despite remastering, the Krystian Zimerman sounds harsh in spots I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to the pianist and assuming he Krystian Zimerman banging at the keys.
He tends to be too precise and note perfect at the expense of musicality at times. Zimmerman and Karajan wisely don't try to beat the competition with speed but rather give time for the lyrical portions of the concertos to unfold, and they blossom beautifully.
The Allegro Molto Moderato - Schumann* - Grieg* - Berliner Philharmoniker come off well but are not the last word in inspired readings. Still, these are a very competent pair of performances and are worth a listen and order if you can afford more than a couple of discs for these concertos. Recommended but not as a frontrunner. Format: Vinyl Verified Purchase.
Everything went very well with the order. Thank You. I like it. I was very pleased with this CD and I would recommend Herbert Vo for others. The sound is good and the artists capture the spirit of the work. One person found this Its All I Can Do - The Cars - The Cars Anthology - Just What I Needed. The 4th is heaven and in my view by far the most wonderful of Beethoven's contributions.
Format: Audio CD. Krystian Zimerman, one of the great pianists of the 20th century, and Herbert von Karajan collaborate to record two of the most iconic concertos in the romantic piano repertoire. Both concertos feature the Berlin Philharmonic.
Zimerman at the time of this recording was gaining popularity and momentum for his DG recordings of Brahms and Chopin, and Krystian Zimerman collaborations with Giulini and Kondrashin. Karajan of course was well established by this point. When big names in classical name join the result is not always great, Allegro Molto Moderato - Schumann* - Grieg* - Berliner Philharmoniker when it comes to Karajan. In this case the two deliver pretty great performances and are well in sync.
The Schumann Concerto and Grieg Concerto are often paired together because they are both romantic piano concertos, they both are in A minor, and they both fit easily on a CD. The recordings are from the early 80s, and they are as close as you can get to calling them definitive recordings of both concertos.
There are so many performers of these great works, which makes picking one quite difficult, but this is one of the ones I frequently revisit. The tempo of these concertos is on the slower side and they feature excellent sound, and a sense of warmth and grandeur. Those who are fans of these artists should be aware that both also recorded the Schumann concerto Krystian Zimermanbut both of these recordings are much harder to find comparatively.
This album DG is a great introduction to these works and the artists involved for music Song Of Rain And Moss - Elador - A Wanderers Tale who are either seasoned veterans or new to classical music. List of the works on this album can be found Allegro Molto Moderato - Schumann* - Grieg* - Berliner Philharmoniker pianistdiscography.
Both concertos are played somehow slowly compared Allegro Molto Moderato - Schumann* - Grieg* - Berliner Philharmoniker what is usual.
These are performances in which elegance counts more than excitement. If you don't like such well-mannered playing, please remove more stars. The Grieg concerto suffers that way; it is very much pomp here, even with a considerable stress and agitation at chosen moments.
The feeling is very much of sitting in a concerto hall among a lot of well-dressed people. Production values are high Allegro Molto Moderato - Schumann* - Grieg* - Berliner Philharmoniker Karajan knows very much about sound, this is however not enough to save me from boredom.
But this is not so much about the Grieg concerto. It is more about the Schumann concerto. Schumann was an uneven composer, who made many works that wouldn't be solid enough if they missed the stamp of Schumann, however is this concerto one of his few masterpieces, one of the most solid piano concertos made in the 19th century.
It is a more introvert work, which I can take in many different performances. Although it wouldn't be my first choice, I wouldn't like to miss it either, as I return to it now and then. This is perhaps the best Grieg and a very good Schumann, Herbert Vo. The sound is not state-of-the-art, anyway good enough to me.
That would be my first choice, if I had one. See all 24 customer reviews. Write a customer review. Customers who bought this item also bought.

And yet the recording by Krystian Zimerman and Herbert von Karajan that was made more than thirty years ago towers above its competitors - including those made during the CD age - by dint of its elegance and radiant tonal beauty.
