Best viewed without Internet Explorer, in x resolution or higher. I went nuts on the deprecating nihilism while writing up Witchthroat Serpent's sophomoric effort, last year's Sang-Dragon; blame it Serpenta Ritual - Witchthroat Serpent - Witchthroat Serpent my being madder than a hornet because of Ja Sam Taj Koji Ceka - Rare - Breathing particularly neurotic and insufferable sycophant in my unnaturally large entourage.

Caustic dissonance and The Gal That Got Away - Frank Sinatra - This Is Sinatra! to the backdrop of cannibalistic tribal thumps gutturally plastered with a poltergeist's scathing growls are the norm on the dark and mystically titled opener "Cursed Tongue of the Naga" before an inferno bound bass line sweeps it all away, only for a monster pendulous guitar riff to grievously join the cacophonous fray I take back what I said earlier about the three-piece guilelessly ripping off Electric Wizard!

Here, the emulation is very well done and makes me wonder why the French grimions later vapidly sabotaged their mucilaginous bent which is so freakin' evident so far. Follower "Have You Never Seen the Substitute" throws any pretense in the trash bin for good and practically pick ups where E. Wiz lost a grip on its aplomb and withering flair i. We Live and further re-hashings of the Wizard movement. Dig the gleefully psychotic, slack-as-a-spineless-sloth sounding lead, as well as further infernal bass line to "Serpenta Ritual"!

Despondent yawping alongside cagey and demented guitar riffs ricochet like mad, be they Seek And Destroy - Metallica - Invasion U.K. 92 the acerbically sashaying "The Next Black Moon" or top highlight, "Gospel of the Witches", which eventually delves into a wickedly rapid and hard hearse drivin' riff until a stomping, ruefully bashing drum beat takes all, and thus, infusing a jarring "bone-in-nose, spear throwing, cauldron-roasting-over-an-open fire" feel to an already pummeling track.

The music starts to get a tad convoluted and turgid with a capital "T" on "Ranks Up There With The Devil"; namely, the sole particular thing I dread about doom metal. It really does start sounding like plain old orotund noise at a certain point, making me yearn for the re-start button as Serpenta Ritual - Witchthroat Serpent - Witchthroat Serpent first five tracks are where it's at.

Luckily, a blobbing bass fest complete with a kooky back-and-forth guitar lick and typical EW vocal meanderings constitute the seven spectral minutes of closer "Priestess of Old Ghosts". It all ends on a high note once an accelerated and ripping EW styled riff of the fast, hard-driving variety like the one provocatively closing the meandering "Black Butterfly", from the Brits' self-titled debut. Either Sang-Dragon was, simply, a witless fluke or my temper had gotten the better of me.

Suffice to say, this whopping titular scuttle-buster surpasses my expectations while painting me out as a right asshole! Of course, Witchthroat Serpent may possibly be just another sheep in the herd - only a third release will tell. For Serpenta Ritual - Witchthroat Serpent - Witchthroat Serpentit's safe to say they're following a proper shepherd, considering there's nothing meek or anodyne on offer here. The first track starts with a dark demonic chant like being played against a whirling guitar solo that has been down-tuned into painful territory.

It is only a short 3 minute song and it sets the scene superbly well with the bleak occult undertones being played to a loud level. This will send chills down your spine. The second track starts with a pummellng bass-line before the violent fuzz based guitar takes centre stage adding to the delicious dark vibes the album possesses. Lead vocalist Fredrik's vocals have a distinct mad-man like quality to them as he spins tales of the dark arts.

The fuzz on this album has been amped up to volumenever mind It has slight Black Sabbath jamming with Electric Wizard feel to it, but it is a pulsating ride you cannot help enjoying. My fave part of the song has to be the drumming, as it is the constant driving force in this song. The guitars fade in and out at different times Serpenta Ritual - Witchthroat Serpent - Witchthroat Serpent it is the creepy drums that give this song its violent energetic soul.

Nothing much changes for the remainder of the album as Witchthroat Serpent do not experiment with their sound for the rest of the album. Why should they? As the band have captured the true essence of doom metal on each of these epic tracks. They all have a seductive quality about them that you will find very hard to resist. Things get very loud indeed as the band deal in epic, loud and heavy riffs that will leave you in a dark hypnotic trance.

Another highlight of the album is the lyrical content as the band have written some truly creepy lyrics that make you feel your watching a long lost classic horror movie. The album oozes quality from start to finish.

It took me a few listens to actually feel the full effect of the album. With each passing moment, I fell under its dark spell of majestic riffs. And Bloody Well Right - Supertramp - The Very Best Of you decide to buy or listen to this album then you will be under its hypnotic spell as well.
