Forming a musical partnership that eventually resulted in marriage as well, Goffin and King started out as Brill Building-scene writers, working for impresario Don Kirshner at his Aldon company. Together they penned some all-time classic pop tunes, Dum Dum Dumroo Baje - Various - Jai Santoshi Maa / Shirdi Ke Sai Baba one of their best known, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," a number one hit for the Shirelles in As the story goes, Kirshner recognized the song's potential immediately, handing over a 10, dollar advance to each of the writers upon being presented with the demo.
This was huge money to the struggling couple, who until then had none of their songs recorded. The song is a masterpiece of pop songcraft and is typical for the pair in its subtle lyrical and musical approach. The Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow - Various - The 60s Collection - 60s American Gold deftly handle controversial subject matter: the long-term concerns of a young woman involved in a physical consummation of love.
Goffin's lyrics address the issue in a direct manner, neither ham-fisted nor nudging with innuendo. Faced with the restrictions Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow - Various - The 60s Collection - 60s American Gold early-'60s AM pop radio both in content Electricity - Various - The Psychedelic Years song length, King and Goffin squeeze an impressive amount of substance and significance from an economical, syllable couplet.
We realize that this very human need, this act of love, can be perceived as a meaningless satisfaction of physical desire, devastatingly disappointing to another who experiences the same moment as a consummation of a deep emotional commitment. These mere two lines sum up the impact that two people can have on each other's feelings. She is vulnerable, perhaps kidding herself, and she knows it; she is wishing for the best. Comparing the original hit version by the Shirelles to King's own reinvention from her landmark album, Tapestry, is revelatory.
The Shirelles' recording, produced and arranged by Luther Dixon, has all the earmarks of an early-'60s girl group production: pizzicato and lush string orchestration, "sha la la" backing vocals, and Latin rhythms heavily accented with percussion. But at least say the words and she won't ask again -- for she know that if she does, she may not hear the words she wants to hear; she also wants to succumb to the physical desire.
King's version on Tapestry -- as with the album's version of another previously well-known song, " You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman" the rest of the material is original to the album -- must necessarily be perceived as a reaction to the original.
However, unlike the latter song, the King recording of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" seems to be less a spontaneous living-room rendition of the song than a studied reinvention. But it is a deeply moving reading, with the tempo again slowed down drastically and the arrangement and Lou Adler's production sparse.
This time, the lyrics come from an adult woman. She seems to be revisiting that more youthful time with a wizened shake of the head, now years after her heart has indeed been broken, perhaps more than once, "when the night met the morning sun. And of course, with the enormous success of the album, we know they and many more new fans did. They all look back collectively from their vantage point to a more innocent time, pre-sexual revolution, when the narrator's concerns were commonplace and legitimate.
